At Brunton, we help our children learn how to learn.

We will teach children to:

✓ Focus and become absorbed in their learning
✓ Push themselves and step out of their comfort zone
✓ Remain calm in the face of uncertainty or difficulty
✓ Monitor thoughts and self-regulate by managing own reactions and behaviours
✓ Solve learning challenges by knowing how to help themselves
✓ Develop and value their curiosity and creative thinking
✓ Be confident in asking questions to further their learning
✓ Develop the skills to evaluate and edit their work independently

We actively model, teach and practice the skills needed to become successful lifelong learners through the use of our learner characters :-

Our Community

At Brunton, we prepare our children to be ready for life and the wider world so they can help shape and cultivate a better world for all of our futures. We will build on our values of respect and kindness by ensuring our children are provided with rich, meaningful experiences at Brunton.

We will:

✓ Openly welcome parents/visitors to enrich the curriculum and inspire the children to dream big
✓ Create opportunities for parental engagement
✓ Build collaborative partnerships with local organisations as our Great Park community continues to grow
✓ Use Brunton Voices and Eco-Warriors to engage the local community
✓ Engage with our older community through our work with Manor House and Bowmont House residents
✓ Celebrate and build links with different faith communities
✓ Engage and provide rich experiences through cultural capital by using our local environment and partner
✓ Continue to embrace ‘No-Outsiders’ and reflecting realities to understand how unique and special everyone is.
✓ Promote British Values in all aspects of learning

Oracy

At Brunton, we believe in developing a strong culture of language by teaching and promoting the skills needed for our children to learn through talk. We strive for active, engaging, collaborative talk to form the foundation of our curriculum delivery.

Our safe, respectful environment nurtures and grows constructive discussions where children can confidently express their thoughts and ideas independently and collaboratively.

We will:

✓ Deliver high quality phonics teaching where children recognise letter patterns and build vocabulary
✓ Teach oracy through structured writing frames, scaffolds, sentence stems, whole class reading etc
✓ Ask high quality questions and allow children thinking time to use rich dialogue to express their thoughts and ideas.
✓ Teach new and exciting vocabulary and facilitate high quality adult/child interactions to enable children to articulate their thoughts and opinions with clarity and precision
✓ Ensure children become active listeners who engage in critical talk with challenge and respect
✓ Enable discussions, debate and challenge respectfully
✓ Encourage expression of thought, feeling and emotion
✓ Develop communication skills effectively in the written form
✓ Provide opportunities
